Harare – Businessman Wicknell Chivhayo has weighed in on the debate over Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, declaring the proposed extension of the presidential term to 7 years “unstoppable and inevitable”.
In a lengthy post on X, formerly Twitter, Chivhayo dismissed the online backlash since CAB3 was submitted to Parliament for its first reading. He said MPs are mandated to represent the people and that the Constitution requires a majority vote to change the election cycle.
“Rather than delivering the aspirations of becoming an Upper Middle Income Economy under Vision 2030, we are continuously in Election Mode and incessantly campaigning,” Chivhayo wrote. He argued that a 7-year term would allow more focus on development.
Chivhayo also took aim at the opposition, calling them “Narcissist failed” and accusing them of sensationalising a democratic process. He ridiculed claims of civil unrest this week, writing “Zviroto zviroto” and asserting that ZANU PF enjoys “full support of the masses”.
The post included a detour into a viral 33-minute audio recording allegedly involving Apostle B. Java and a journalist. Chivhayo said he listened to it out of boredom while aboard his Gulfstream G550 en route to Tanzania and dismissed it as “33 minutes of HOGWASH” and “political folklore”.
He defended President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s authority, stating: “There is only one King, one chess player and unique Grand Master the LION himself… Shumba Murambwi.” Chivhayo insisted that vice presidents, ministers and other officials “serve at the pleasure of the President” and that ZANU PF is governed by its Constitution, not “Imaginary parallel structures”.
“There is only one centre of power – muudze vamwe!!!” he concluded.
CAB3 proposes to extend the presidential term from 5 to 7 years. The bill has drawn sharp reactions from civil society and opposition groups since its introduction in Parliament.
