HARARE — A viral, 33-minute leaked audio recording has thrown Zimbabwe’s political landscape into turmoil, following explosive claims that prominent businessman and ZANU-PF Central Committee member Kudakwashe Tagwirei is positioning himself to take over the country’s presidency.

The explosive conversation—allegedly featuring Apostle Batsirai Java detailing intelligence he reportedly gathered from his younger brother, socialite Prophet Passion Java—has triggered intense factional suspicion within the ruling ZANU-PF government.

Both Passion Java and political commentators suggest the leak may be an AI-generated or politically motivated attempt to destabilize the Presidium.

The Core Accusations: Tagwirei as the ‘Kingmaker’

In the leaked Shona audio, the speaker claims that Kudakwashe Tagwirei boasts of being the ultimate “kingmaker” in Zimbabwe. The recording outlines details regarding Tagwirei’s alleged grip on the State apparatus:

Cabinet Influence: The audio claims that President Emmerson Mnangagwa regularly consults Tagwirei on major government decisions and cabinet appointments.

Presidium Ambitions: Tagwirei is allegedly positioning himself to bypass or directly confront Vice President Constantino Chiwenga in the battle to succeed Mnangagwa post-2030.

Institutional Capture: The whistleblower alleges Tagwirei is systematically “taking over” Zimbabwe’s massive religious institutions—including the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM), Zion Christian Church (ZCC), and several high-profile prophetic ministries—to secure a massive voting bloc for when “numbers might matter”.

Extravagant Security: The clip describes Tagwirei’s private residence as heavily fortified by advanced drone technology, specialized security personnel, and a steel vault.

Passion Java Disavows the Recording

Speaking from his family home in the United States, Prophet Passion Java released an official video strongly distancing himself from the viral audio.

“I distance myself 100% from all that is being said in the audios. I don’t know where it’s coming from or where it’s going. I am not sure if it is my brother Apostle Java speaking or if it is AI-generated. It’s usually more political attacks… I never had any meeting with Tagwirei or any conversation with him.”

Passion Java added that while his brother, Batsirai Java, was previously married into the opposition family of the late Morgan Tsvangirai, he himself firmly stands with President Mnangagwa. He claimed tech-savvy adversaries are weaponizing family ties to manufacture rifts within ZANU-PF. Apostle Batsirai Java has also reportedly distanced himself from the tape.

Factional Warfare or Information Operation?

The timing of the leak has put state security agencies on high alert. Senior security sources believe the audio is part of a well-orchestrated information operation designed to plant seeds of suspicion between the President and the Vice President.

The leak follows recent online rumors that senior ZANU-PF officials boycotted a wedding hosted by Tagwirei’s family—a claim later debunked when President Mnangagwa himself attended the event. Tagwirei, who was recently co-opted into the ZANU-PF Central Committee, has consistently denied harboring any presidential or presidium ambitions on public platforms.
