Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s Withdraw from 2026 Africa 7s Due to Mauritius Ebola Travel Ban

By Tendai Chisiri

Kampala – Uganda’s Rugby Cranes 7s will miss the 2026 Rugby Africa Mauritius Sevens after Mauritius imposed a temporary entry ban on travelers from countries affected by a recent Ebola outbreak.

In a statement dated Wednesday 10th June 2026, Uganda Rugby President Godwin Arinaitwe Kayangwe confirmed the withdrawal. The ban prevents entry for foreign nationals who have been in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, or South Sudan within 21 days of travel.

“The Rugby Cranes 7s will not participate in the 2026 Rugby Africa Mauritius Sevens,” Kayangwe said. The tournament is scheduled for 20-21 June at SPARC Stadium, Cascavelle, Mauritius, and doubles as part of Rugby Africa’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

Other countries set to compete
The championship will still bring together 12 of Africa’s top sevens nations. With Uganda out, Senegal has been confirmed as their replacement.

The teams and pools are:
Pool A: Defending champions South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria, hosts Mauritius
Pool B: Madagascar, Ghana, Tunisia, Senegal — replacing Uganda
Pool C: Kenya, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Morocco.

Other countries expected include Côte d’Ivoire. South Africa won the 2025 final 28-12 against Madagascar, while Kenya finished 4th after losing 21-19 to Zimbabwe in the bronze playoff.

HSBC qualification hopes remain
Despite the setback, Uganda Rugby said it’s working with Rugby Africa and the Rugby Committee to “explore possibilities for HSBC Division 3 Qualification” through alternative routes.

“We remain committed to the safety of our players, staff and supporters and will provide updates as discussions progress,” Kayangwe added.
