NPAZ warns perpetrators of sexual violence “will be prosecuted and held accountable”
An 18-year-old man from Gokwe South, under Chief Njelele, has been convicted and sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison for raping his 42-year-old aunt.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe NPAZ Bulletin dated 2 June 2026, the incident occurred on 16 May 2026 at around 05:00 while the offender and the victim were walking to a nearby village for casual labor.
NPAZ says the offender grabbed the victim by the neck, tripped her to the ground, and raped her after overpowering her despite her resistance.
The attack was interrupted when a passerby heard shouting and distress noises from the bush. The passerby rushed to the scene, caught the offender in the act, assisted the victim, and escorted her safely home. A formal police report led to the offender’s immediate arrest and subsequent conviction.
NPAZ sends warning
“The NPAZ warns that perpetrators of sexual violence will be prosecuted and held accountable,” the authority stated in the bulletin.
The sentencing comes amid ongoing national efforts to combat gender-based violence. NPAZ has reiterated its commitment to prosecuting sexual violence cases swiftly to ensure justice for survivors and deterrence for offenders.
Under Zimbabwean law, rape carries a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years, with aggravating factors like the age difference and abuse of trust often leading to stiffer penalties.
