Recent violence at Chahwanda Stadium led to another PSL abandonment. Time for change?

HARARE – Castle Lager, sponsor of the Premier Soccer League, has expressed deep concern over a spate of match abandonments, fan violence and reported injuries across several PSL fixtures, including last weekend’s game at Chahwanda Stadium.
In a press release issued this week, the brewer said football has long played a unifying role in Zimbabwean society, bringing together communities and supporters in a shared celebration of passion and national pride. It said recent events “fall short of the spirit of the game and the values we collectively stand for.”
“As a longstanding partner of the PSL, Castle Lager strongly condemns all forms of violence and unsportsmanlike behaviour, both on and off the field,” the statement read. “The safety of fans, players, match officials and all stakeholders remains paramount.”
Castle Lager said it acknowledges ongoing efforts by the Premier Soccer League, clubs and authorities to investigate the incidents and take disciplinary action. It urged all parties to act decisively and transparently to restore confidence in the game.
The sponsor added that it is engaging with PSL leadership to understand the root causes of the disruptions and support long-term solutions for a safe and enjoyable football environment.
“We believe the game must be played, and experienced, in a manner that reflects safety, respect, fairness and unity,” the statement said.
Castle Lager wished those injured a speedy recovery and called on fans to support their teams responsibly and reject violence.
The PSL has faced multiple match abandonments due to crowd trouble, raising concerns over stadium security and fan conduct.
