BINDURA – The Bindura Regional Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a Mazowe man to five years imprisonment for attempted murder after he poured petrol on a food vendor during a dispute over US$1 change.
Kudakwashe Nyeverai, 32, of Jumbo Mine, Mazowe, was convicted after the incident on 27 March 2026 in Chiweshe Village, Chitungwiza Area, Mazowe. One year of the sentence was suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve an effective four-year prison term.
According to court proceedings, the 25-year-old victim was selling food when Nyeverai ordered a plate of sadza and paid US$1. He then requested another serving. When the victim asked him to pay for the second plate first, an argument broke out over change.
The court heard that Nyeverai poured petrol from a two-litre container onto the victim’s head and face while she was cooking near an open fire. The victim immediately caught fire and sustained severe burns to her head and face. She was later medically examined and treated for her injuries.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said the justice system will continue to deal firmly with violent offenders whose reckless actions place innocent lives at risk.
The victim was selling food in the area at the time of the attack, which occurred at around 1100 hours.
