Experts to debate whether demonstrations reflect xenophobia or legitimate grievances
JOHANNESBURG— Salaamedia will host a live panel discussion tonight at 19:00 SAST to examine the underlying causes of recent South African protests, asking whether they are driven by xenophobia or reflect legitimate concerns over illegal migration.
The discussion, scheduled for 6 May 2026, will feature three guests with different perspectives on migration, labour and regional relations. Joining the panel are Malebo Patricia Kobe, an Action SA MP and international relations specialist; Patrick Deale, a specialist labour lawyer and mediator; and Vusi Sibanda of the African Diaspora Forum. The session will be presented by Inayet Wadee.
The debate comes amid ongoing public discourse in South Africa over the impact of undocumented migration on jobs, public services and social cohesion. While some have framed the protests as xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, others argue they stem from broader economic pressures and frustrations over border control and labour practices.
The panel is expected to unpack the legal, economic and social dimensions of the issue, and to explore how South Africa can balance the protection of citizens’ livelihoods with its commitments to regional integration and human rights.
The broadcast will be available across Salaamedia’s X, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube platforms at @SALAAMEDIA.
