HARARE — Zimbabwe Cricket has received a US$20,000 donation from the Tobacco Industries Cricket Supporters Association, marking a renewed commitment to a partnership that spans more than four decades.
The contribution was formally presented by TICSA Chairman Dave Bain during a meeting with ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni this week.
TICSA has a long history with Zimbabwean cricket, most notably funding the construction of the western grandstand at Harare Sports Club ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2003. The association has also previously contributed to ZC’s scholarship programme for emerging talent.
Explaining the latest donation, Bain said TICSA was created to support cricket at all levels in Zimbabwe and has been doing so for 45 years.
“During its history, there have been several periods of inactivity, resulting in a decline in interest in the sport,” Bain said.
“Under the current administration of ZC there has been a positive transformation of cricket which our association fully supports and endorses. Our intention going forward is to assist the governing body where we can.”
Bain commended ZC’s recent progress, citing the hosting of World Cup qualifying events, the resumption of international tours, and the national team’s performance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as evidence that Zimbabwe is “firmly back on the international stage.”
“This has been underpinned by strict control of finances, development of the national side and grassroots programmes which have secured the future for some time to come,” he said.
Bain added that TICSA views the donation as a contribution towards sustaining the current momentum.
“Tobacco Industries welcomes all these initiatives and therefore has offered this donation which we hope in a small way will buttress the continuing efforts of the leadership of ZC,” he said.
Under the leadership of Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani and his Board, alongside Makoni and his management team, ZC has made notable strides in stabilising operations while attracting top international teams to Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club.
This progress culminated in Zimbabwe hosting global tournaments, including the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026, and achieving a historic Super Eight finish at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Makoni expressed appreciation for TICSA’s renewed support, describing it as both symbolic and impactful.
“We are deeply grateful to TICSA for their continued belief in Zimbabwe Cricket,” the ZC Managing Director said.
“Their contribution over the years has played an important role in the development of the game and this renewed support comes at a time when we are working hard to consolidate our gains and grow the sport even further.”
The donation is expected to support ZC’s ongoing development initiatives as the organisation continues to strengthen its presence on the international stage.
