The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a public appeal for information on the whereabouts of Godfrey Karemba, popularly known as “Madzibaba Veshanduko“, saying he is wanted in connection with reports of undermining police authority.
In a press statement dated 22nd July 2026, signed by Commissioner P. Nyathi, Chief Staff Officer for Press and Public Relations, the police urged members of the public to assist with any information regarding Karemba’s location.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is seeking information on the location and whereabouts of Madzibaba ‘Veshanduko’- Godfrey Karemba in connection with reports of undermining police authority,” the statement read.
“Anyone with information should feel free to contact any nearest Police Station or National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp number 0712 800 197.”
Godfrey Karemba is a self-styled religious leader who has become a recognizable figure on social media platforms in Zimbabwe. He is known for posting videos and making public statements on governance, corruption, economic issues, and citizens’ rights.
Over the past year, he has used the title “Madzibaba Veshanduko” – loosely translated as “Father of Change” – and has gathered a following, particularly among young people engaging in political and social discourse online.
The police appeal comes weeks after Karemba publicly announced plans for a national “March” scheduled for 31 July. In videos circulated online in early to mid-July, he called on citizens to assemble to demand accountability from authorities.
The announcement generated wide discussion on social media and in civic circles regarding the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, requirements for police notification, and public order. The ZRP statement did not specify whether the investigation is directly linked to the planned 31 July gathering.
The statement cites “undermining of police authority” as the reason for seeking Karemba. Under Zimbabwean law, this offence is provided for under Section 41 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23], which deals with acts that undermine or insult the authority of the police.
The ZRP regularly issues public appeals when it requires assistance to locate individuals connected to ongoing investigations. No further details of the allegations were provided in the 22 July statement.
Commissioner Nyathi said the public should provide any credible information to the nearest police station or through the provided contact lines. The police also cautioned against spreading unverified information that could hinder investigations.
As of the time of publishing, there has been no public response from Karemba regarding the police statement.
