The African Development Bank Group has approved $13 million to help the DRC, South Sudan and Uganda respond to a new Ebola outbreak.
The DRC declared the outbreak on 15 May 2026 in Ituri province, affecting Bunia, Rwampara and Mongwalu. Cases have since spread to North Kivu and South Kivu.
Of the $13m, $10m will go through WHO to support the DRC response. A further $3m through Africa CDC will be split between DRC, Uganda and South Sudan, with $1m each. In total DRC will receive $11m.
The funds will support early diagnosis, surveillance, community engagement, public awareness and regional coordination.
“This emergency support reflects the Bank’s commitment to protecting human lives and strengthening health systems,” said Mohamed Cherif, AfDB Deputy Director General for Central Africa.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which currently has no approved vaccine or treatment.
