Young Indian squad named for Harare T20I series starting July 23
HARARE – Zimbabwe fans will get a rare chance to see a host of India’s next generation in action next month, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday named a 15-player squad featuring three uncapped players for the upcoming T20I series at Harare Sports Club.
The 3-match series runs July 23, 25, and 26 in Harare, giving the Chevrons an opportunity to avenge their Super Eight exit at the hands of India during the T20 World Cup 2026 in Chennai.
With India currently locked in a series against England, the selectors have opted to rest frontline stars like Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and T20 World Cup 2026 Player of the Tournament Sanju Samson.
In come fresh faces. Fast bowlers Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma earned maiden T20I call-ups, while Punjab’s explosive keeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh also gets his first shot in India colors.
Shreyas Iyer will lead the side, with big hitters Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma and 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also in the mix.
For Zimbabwe, this is a series to target. India’s last visit in July 2024 ended in a 4-1 loss for the Chevrons, but the most recent meeting was far closer.
Brian Bennett’s unbeaten 97 off 59 balls almost stunned India in Chennai during the T20 World Cup Super Eights. That knock remains the standout individual performance by a Zimbabwe batter against India and will give the home side belief.
With India fielding an experimental squad, Craig Ervine’s men will look to capitalize on home conditions and a crowd behind them at Harare.
