Shepherd Chitapa, better known as Professor Muzvinafundo, has defied expectations by carving a name for himself in Zimbabwe’s circular music scene, despite being the son of a founding pastor.
In an exclusive interview, Professor Muzvinafundo revealed how growing up in the same neighborhood as music heavyweights Andy Muridzo and Jah Prayzah inspired him to pursue a career in Afro-fusion music.
“I was inspired by Andy Muridzo and Jah Prayzah as we grew up in Budiririro 5B, Harare. We’d see each other playing mbira, and I started liking Afro-fusion, a mix of mbira and guitars,” he said. Despite his Christian upbringing, Professor Muzvinafundo gradually transitioned into circular music, initially writing songs with a gospel twist.
Now, his weekends are filled with gigs, and his work is gaining recognition. His first album, “Tiri Musango,” dropped in 2021, and he’s already released three albums. He’s collaborated with Tryson Chimbetu and performs at high-profile events, including Prisons Day alongside big names like Sulumani Chimbetu and Simon Mutambi.
Professor Muzvinafundo’s band, The Culture Melody Band, focuses on showcasing Zimbabwean culture through their music.
He advises upcoming artists to stay focused, work hard, and avoid competing with established musicians. “Music is a mission. Everyone’s on a mission. It’s good to give each other advice,” he said.
With a packed schedule and a growing fan base, Professor Muzvinafundo is making waves in Zimbabwe’s music scene. His next album is set for release next year, with singles and videos planned for this year.
