
On average an animal if one is talking in terms of cattle needs 30-50 litres of water per day and farmers are urged to ensure they provide their livestock with water during this El Nino period.
Giving a presentation to farmers, Rutendo Nyahode deputy director for Livestock Production ARDA services in the Ministry of Land, Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Rural Development stressed on the effects of Elnino on livestock, advice to farmers and the steps that the government is taking to curb the challenge at hand.
In order to control or curb the effects of El Nino, the government has activated the whole government approach. The government has approached various stakeholders that includes other government ministries, government partners, such as NGOs, the UN agencies, the private sector for immediate as well as short term measures.
“The government currently have approached partners in terms of borehole drilling, so as to ensure supply of water for livestock in the country. Borehole drilling is set for Monday 11 December whereby various players have offered the rigs and resources to drill boreholes in the worst affected areas”, Nyahode said.
Also partners, other private players, government parastatals, councils and DDF have approached to support with rigs or water bowsers in order to offer an immediate solution to transport water to the worst affected areas so that the animals don’t end up stuck in the mud.
