Goromonzi South hosts football tournament

Ribexy FC lifts the trophy

8 teams battled it out for the first spot at Idslleigh in Goromonzi South on Sunday and Ribexy FC clinched the tournament which was sponsored by Nyasha Ribexy Chireshe who is also the owner of Ribexy FC.


The tournament was done because the community wanted to do a memorial service of Arnold Sikagwini who died in a boat in the area at Hunyani. The promoter wanted to clarify that they no longer want people who use home made boats which are illegal.

The other objectives of the tournament was to teach the community to live peacefully by saying no to substance abuse like illicit beer, Crystal Meth, other types of drugs, say no to early child marriages, say no to violence including domestic violence.

Ribexy FC won the tournament after beating Hampton FC 2-0 in the final. Ribexy scored in the final match to help his team clinch the trophy. The semi-final was okayed between Time Click FC and Ribexy. The match end 1-1 in the stoppage time . Ribexy won 5-4 on penalties.

“Sports activities helps a lot, they refresh the memories and farm workers would be taking a rest”, said Chireshe.


“They also unite people and make people be able to scout talents When we hosted the tournament, we had scout players from ZIFA division 1 teams and they scouted the best players so it was good to have the tournament”, he added


The tournamt will be done each and every year to commemorate the death of their colleague. “If we manage, we can do it every year on the 10th of July when he died”, said Chireshe If a team wins the trophy for 3 consecutives years, they are entitled to have the trophy as their own and it would be replaced by another one.


The winning team walked away with $150 USD, medals and kit of 14 pairs, the second team pocketed $50USD, atrophy, medals and a ball whilst the third team was given 2 balls.


Approximately $1 000USD was used to make the event possible.


The right t teams that participated are Dunstan FC, Mbuya Emma FC, Ribexy FC, Hampton FC, Hustlers FC, Hunyani Bulerts FC, Time and Click FC and Lash brook FC.
