HARARE – The City of Harare says it is pressing ahead with demolitions of illegal structures in St Martins Extension, but will not target properties protected by a subsisting High Court order.
Harare City Council Corporate Communications Manager Stanley Gama confirmed the position in an interview with News Sport Online Friday.
“The City of Harare is currently carrying out demolitions on illegally built structures in St Martins. Demolitions of temporary and permanent illegal structures are underway in the area as the City of Harare cracks down on unauthorized land occupations and illegal structures,” said Gama.
The exercise has drawn public criticism after some residents questioned why certain structures were not demolished despite earlier council notices.
Addressing the concerns, Gama clarified the council’s legal position:
“We are not carrying out demolitions on those covered by this court order,” he said, referring to a High Court order dated 31 October 2025 which bars the local authority from demolishing specified properties pending final determination of the matter.
Gama also urged residents to be cautious and verify land deals before paying.
“The City of Harare urges residents to consult our housing department or district offices before purchasing land as they are falling prey to land barons and criminals,” he said.
Council said further details on the scope of the demolitions and affected areas will be released in due course.
The St Martins operation forms part of the City’s broader campaign to enforce by-laws and remove unauthorized settlements across Harare.
Affected residents have been advised to visit their district offices or the Housing Department for verification of land status.
