Josiah Magama Tongogara: Architect of Zimbabwe’s Unity and Vision

By Rumbidzai Olivia Mubirira

December 26, 2025, marks 46 years since Zimbabwe lost liberation hero Josiah Magama Tongogara. As ZANLA commander, he championed unity between ZANU and ZAPU, advocated national reconciliation, and pushed for equitable resource distribution.

At Lancaster House 1979, Tongogara played a crucial bridging role, prioritizing peace and unity for Zimbabwe’s transition. He envisioned a Zimbabwe with inclusive governance representing the country’s diversity, addressing socio-economic inequalities rooted in colonialism, and standing in solidarity with other liberation movements across Africa.

Tongogara’s leadership and strategic brilliance made ZANLA formidable. He believed Zimbabwe’s independence should benefit all, with resources shared equitably. His focus on unity and reconciliation could’ve shaped the nation’s path.

His legacy lives on in Zimbabwe’s institutions, schools, and military barracks named in his honor. As Zimbabwe remembers Tongogara, his principles of unity, accountability, and justice remain relevant.
