Harare – The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has issued a press release warning the public about a false claim circulating on social media that the authority intends to impose a tax on users of solar energy. ZERA categorically described the report as “entirely false, devoid of any truth and should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves.”
In the statement, ZERA underscored that the government’s recently launched National Energy Compact aims for universal energy access by 2030 and is actively expanding all energy forms, including solar, to ensure “no one and no place is left behind.”
Incentives currently in place:
- Duty‑free importation of solar equipment
- Training programmes for solar installers to boost industry capacity and safety standards
- Net‑metering regulations allowing households to feed excess power into the grid
ZERA emphasized that no levy or charge is required—or will be required—to install or own a solar system for domestic use.
“The Government, through its recently launched National Energy Compact, aims to ensure universal access to energy by 2030. It has already put in place mechanisms to ensure that there is increased roll‑out of all energy forms including solar to ensure that ‘no one and no place is left behind’,” the release read.
The authority urged the public to disregard the malicious statements, noting they contradict government policy and priorities.
