President Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa has launched the National Resource Mobilisation Programme to combat drug and substance abuse in Zimbabwe. The programme aims to mobilize resources to support the country’s efforts in addressing the growing public health, social, and security concern.
In his address, President Mnangagwa highlighted the negative impacts of drug abuse on families, communities, and institutions, citing instances of gender-based violence, school dropouts, suicides, and road traffic accidents.
The President emphasized the importance of a whole-of-government and society approach in dealing with the challenge. He noted that the National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse has made notable successes in the fight against drug abuse, including the apprehension and prosecution of peddlers and dealers.
President Mnangagwa also announced that his administration has allocated ZIG 865 million (U$3m) in the 2025 national budget to support the Drug and Substance Abuse Programme. He urged individuals, corporates, and stakeholders to support the capacitation of 67 identified rehabilitation centers across the country.
The President emphasized the need for collective action in fighting the scourge of drug abuse and eliminating the drug culture growing within the society. He urged parents, guardians, leaders, churches, and the community at large to exercise positive parenting skills and work together to address the challenge.
The launch of the National Resource Mobilisation Programme marks a significant step towards addressing drug abuse in Zimbabwe. With the support of stakeholders and the government’s commitment, the country is poised to make significant strides in combating this growing concern.
