Zimbabwe Cricket shines bright at ANSA 2024

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) was the toast of the local sporting fraternity this week after emerging as the biggest winner at the Annual National Sports Awards (ANSA) 2024 ceremony held in Harare on Sunday night.

Cementing its place as one of the most successful sporting bodies in the country, ZC was named the National Sport Association of the Year, a recognition of the remarkable strides made in the development and promotion of cricket in Zimbabwe.

Adding to the celebratory mood, Zimbabwe women’s rising star Kelis Ndhlovu stole the limelight with a sensational double victory.

The talented all-rounder, who recently captained the Under-19 national team and is already making waves in the senior women’s national side, was crowned Junior Sportswoman of the Year before walking away with the coveted Junior Sportsperson of the Year award.

The accolades did not stop there.

Zimbabwe’s internationally acclaimed umpire Langton Rusere was recognised as the Technical Official of the Year, further highlighting the strides the sport has made both on and off the field.

Star all-rounder Sikandar Raza was also honoured at the ceremony, belatedly receiving the Sportsperson of the Year 2023 award, a recognition that comes as a testament to his exceptional performances, leadership and unwavering commitment to Zimbabwean cricket.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani expressed his elation at the organisation’s achievements, attributing the success to collective effort.

“This is simply amazing! It reflects the incredible work that everyone in cricket has put in – from our dedicated fans and hardworking groundsmen to the board, executive and players,” he said.

“Hard work truly pays off, and this recognition is a testament to that. We will continue striving for excellence and building on this momentum.

“Looking ahead, 2025 is set to be an exciting year, with nine Test matches on the horizon.

“We are heading to Bangladesh next, then hosting South Africa and New Zealand – exciting times for Zimbabwe Cricket.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our team and everyone involved. Congratulations to the entire Zimbabwe Cricket family, including our passionate and unwavering supporters.”

The recognition at ANSA 2024 caps off a remarkable year for ZC, which has been working tirelessly to revamp the sport and ensure its sustainability and competitiveness on the global stage.

With a packed international calendar in 2025 that includes a historic nine Test matches against Bangladesh, England, South Africa and New Zealand, ZC’s triumph at ANSA serves as a timely boost as the association continues to push the boundaries for Zimbabwean cricket.
