Harare Central Police Station breach: Investigation underway after inmate escapes

By Tendai Chisiri

“Mike Chikengezha, a male adult, was apprehended by Police Intelligence after harassing pupils from Allan Wilson School at Unity Square Park.

Chikengezha had ordered two students to accompany him to the park, claiming he wanted to punish them for not going straight home. Chikengezha demanded their money, school bags, and mobile phones, allegedly to safeguard their belongings.

Later that day, Police Intelligence arrested Chikengezha for kidnapping and theft. However, he escaped from the Harare Central Police Station cell that night, sparking concerns about the facility’s security and potential police corruption.

Inmates reported that Chikengezha had complained about needing his inhaler, which he had left downstairs with his clothes. When another inmate was allowed to visit the reception, Chikengezha accompanied him and never returned to his cell. His absence was noticed during roll call the next morning.

The police claim Chikengezha escaped through a hole in a door upstairs, but inmates argue that jumping from such a height would have caused injury or death. Inmates inspected the alleged escape route and questioned how Chikengezha could have descended without assistance.

The incident raises questions about police accountability and potential collusion in Chikengezha’s escape.

Harare provincial spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza could not be reached for comment.
