Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) is hosting their inaugural annual Media Golf Day at the ZRP Golf Club in Harare Friday.
ZMC held a press conference to notify emphasize that the unprofessional conduct that is creeping into some media houses cannot be be condoned. The tournament is being held under the theme “Professional Media for Peaceful Elections”.
“This theme underlines the constant message from the Commission that the upcoming Harmonised Elections are an opportunity for Zimbabwean, are an opportunity for Zimnabweans to exercise their constitutional duty and responsibility to choose their leaders in a dignified and peaceful manner”, said ZMC.
The Prof. Ruby Magosvongwe led executive sometime last month, they welcomed the proclamation of the 23rd of August 2023 as the day of the country’s elections.
“We went on to call upon citizens to embrace the elections, remembering that the rights they are exercising have a bearing on future generations,”.
“In keeping with the Constitutional mandate of the Chapter 12 Commissions, the Zimbabwe Media Commission reiterates the active participation of Zimbabweans in building sustainable democracy and a culture of good governance,” ZMC said.
“This requires that citizens exercise their rights in a peaceful and orderly for the greater national good. The media in particular is duty-bound to keep citizens informed on important developments in the electoral environment, providing accurate information and promoting robust debate”, ZMC added.
The Golf Day offers media and its various stakeholders an opportunity to build a rapport, and collegiality even as people make different choices.
“It is part of our contribution to a peaceful environment during these elections. It emphasizes that there is so much that bring us together than divide us,”.
“This is just part of a broader programme where the ZMC has interacted with different stakeholders on promoting a media environment that emphasizes professionalism and respect of the media,” stated ZMC.
