Econet Holdings (Pvt) Ltd has warned its clients and the public against responding to a fake viral social media post.
The post circulating especially on WhatsApp platform purported to be originating from the company is offering free data to respondents for a marathon call.
The fake post which this journalist decided to verify was forwarded by a colleague who had almost fallen prey to the message.
This journalist upon noticing some fake features in the message advised the recipient not to respond to the message or even circulate it.
Efforts to get details of the original sender of the fake message and the motive have not been successful.
However, members of the public continually fall pray to such fake posts on social media platforms nowadays.
The fake message is titled: Africa Number 1 Marathon 10GB offer. It further goes on to inform gullible clients quoted verbatim as follows.
“ECONET is giving their customers 19GB of free data to celebrate Africa Number 1 Marathon day Hurry now and check if you are eligible to receive 10 GB free data reward”.
The post goes on to inform unsuspecting clients by saying in bold letters CHECK HERE and providing a link quoted as follows:https://bit.ly/Get-Econet-10GB-Marathin-free-data
Econet Holdings Spokesperson,Fungayi Mandiveyi said that the post, “is indeed fake.”
Econet also said that if there is any promotion running,it will inform its clients.
The mobile telecommunications company has also advised clients and the public not to open the link or to even provide their personal details.
Reports indicate that such fake posts are being used by scammers to solicit people ‘s private and confidential information for negative use or criminal activities.
