Gas explosion damages house in Glen-Norah

A family in Glen-Norah had their dining room of a four roomed
core house damaged by a gas explosion which resulted in an estimated value of US$ 3 000 loss with three people sustaining burns on Monday.

A police memorandum states that at around 1120 hours the landlady Chofuna Chare aged 66 , was at home.

In the dining room was she and also her four-day old baby boy who was sleeping on the sofa and a 19-year-old daughter only known as Charmaine by the female informant Juliet Chizheve aged 31.

Chofuna Chare on the day sprayed Baygon insect killer to kill flies and other insects whilst the doors and windows were closed.

“Soon after spraying the Baygon, Chofuna Chare lit the gas tank which was in the dining room and instantly there was an explosion caused by the gas”, said the police in the memorandum.

“The 5kg gas tank skyrocketed, exploded and blew off the dining room roof. All the dining windows and part of walls were extensively damaged. A four-plate stove and defy upright refrigerator were damaged beyond recognition”, added the police.

The fire brigade was not summoned since neighbours managed to extinguish the fire. All the damage was caused by the explosion and nothing was burnt.

Chofuna Chare, Chairmane and a four-year-old baby boy sustained burns on their bodies, but the extent of the injuries is not known since they were rushed to Sally Mugabe hospital by a well-wisher.
