Like an A4 page taken upwards by a whirlwind was the case of the metal sheet roof as it went up in the sky when a gas explosion exploded and burnt a core tuck shop in Glen-Norah high-density suburbs near High-glen road last week Friday afternoon.
A tuck shop in Glen- Norah was burnt to ashes in an incident that left residents shell shocked as the fire was swift and strong leaving a livelihood lost in the event.
Goods approximately $US 1500 were lost in the inferno and late afternoon, the owners could be seen carrying the burnt metal sheets home and sweeping the ashes.
Onlookers said when the shop keeper who resale domestic gas was serving a woman, thus when the pipe got loose and gas started to come out from the cylinder getting into his tuck shop attached to the gas cylinders with the gas for resale.
“When the pipe got loose, the gas coming out entered the tuck shop where there was a new gas refrigerator thus causing the fire”, Samuel Chemazo a resident said.
“The fire brigade was so swift as they come within some minutes, however the fire had devoured everything”, Letwin Nohumba a resident said.
Tafirenyika Mandizvidza, a Glen-Norah son said Environmental Management Agency (EMA), should regulate that those who resale gas for cooking have a fire extinguisher to minimize the damage caused by the fire.
“To avoid these devastating incidents, EMA should put strict restrictions upon licensing the gas vendors that they should have fire extinguishers”, said Mandizvidza.
Efforts to get comments from Harare Fire Brigade was futile as the Harare City Council communications officer who authorises interviews was unreachable.
