It will be a hive of activity on 7 May at Borrowdale race the prestigious Grade One Castle Tankard is back with a bang after a two year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Castle Tankard final acceptance event was held at the race course and it had been two years Castle Tankard was on a break enforced by Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the final acceptance event, Delta Lagers general manager Tichafa Rinomhota known as Tich said they were pleased to be back at the Mashonaland Turf Club (MTC) after a two year absence.
“Having started in 1960, The Tankard has and continues to be the only grade one horse racing event in the country”, said Rinomhota
“This makes it the most prestigious and sought-after Title by horse owners, trainers and jockeys in Zimbabwe, while commanding the interesting and participation from across the region”, he added.
Preparations are already under way and the whole country is invited to join. It will be a fun filled day of premium horse racing, shared moments with friends, ice cold Castle Lager Braai and lots of entertainment from the country’s biggest artists and DJs.
MTC’s Kirsty Stirdolph thanked Delta Lagers for continuing the tradition of sponsoring the Castle Tankard.
“To trainers, it has been a tough and challenging few years andwe thank you for your dedication and hardworking in getting your big runners prepped and ready. It looks like it’s going to be a very competetive field of a high caliber horses and I think it is going to be a really excitng race” she added.
Delta Lagers marketing manager Kundai Mawema in an interview said this year they donot have international horses running.
“Horses running in this edition are all Zimbabwean breed”, she said.
Delta Lagers is sponsoring the Race 1 race to the tune of $50 000 USD which is 2 000 metres and is the 62nd edition with 13 horses.
