FBC Holdings the title sponsors of the Zimbabwe Open Golf Tournament that was launched on Wednesday in Harare poured in ZWL $12,5000,000,00 as prize money.
The prestigious Open Golf Tournament also on the Sunshine Tour calendar is back after a 3- year hiatus due to lack of sponsorship in 2019 and Covid-19 pandemic induced lockdown in 2020 and 2021.
The first prize winner will walk away with R2 million whilst the other 60 golfers who would have made the cut will share the remainder of the ZWL $12,5000,000,00 prize money.
The Sunshine Tour is a men’s professional tournament beard in Southern and East Africa with the prize money in South African rand.
Speaking at the launch FBC Holdings managing director Webster Rusere said the ZWL$12,500,000,00 sponsorship towards the FBC 2022 Zimbabwe Open Golf Tournament is part of their corporate, social impact initiatives aimed at enabling the well being of communities they serve.
“In this regard, we are delighted to note that this prestigious tournament will be christened after the FBCH Brand. It will be affectionately known as the “FBC Zimbabwe Open”, Golf Tournament. Therefore we are extremely delighted to be the Title Sponsor o this key event”, he said.
The other sponsors for the golf tournament are Gold Pilsener, Old Mutual, and OK Zimbabwe as the associate sponsors while Tongaat Bullet and Nyaradzo group are the anchor sponsors.
The tournament will be played at Royal and Chapman Golf Clubs. There would be two batches of golfers who will change golf courses in their order.
Zimbabwe Open Golf Committee chairperson Livingstone Gwata said they are happy to bring back the Zimbabwe Open and hope the tournament will be elevated to the DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour.
“The excellent manner in which the Zimbabwe Open has been run over the years has not gone unnoticed .Our tour partners the Sunshine Tour represented here by their tournament director, Garry Todd were invited by the DP World Tour to recommend countries outside South Africa that could successfully stage a European Tour Event and they had no hesitation in putting Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Open forward for inclusion in the European tour”, he said.
More than 192 golfers from different national around the globe will battle it out next month. In the last edition in 2018 Bryce Easton scooped the first prize.
