“Let’s up lift our football by starting to promote youth development with residential communities having junior teams and High schools having Zifa Divison 2 league teams”, said Prince Edward coach Gift Muterere in an interview.
Gift “Chommie” Muterere brought about the need for the sport to be recognised in schools to the extent of acquianted individuals be included in the coaching department in schools rather than prefering teachers only.
Muterere who played in the top-flight league started coaching Prince Edward Academy in 2020 where groomed the likes of Belly Antonio who made waves in the foootball arena at a tender age.
Prince Edward Academy coach is one of the fortunate players who managed to play for a community club at a tender age before playing for Caps United in the Under 10 in 1991.
Although an accident deprived him of gaining exposure whilst turning up for Sporting Lions in the Castle Premier Soccer League he was never deterred to fulfill his dream of making it in sport.
He voluntary coached Zuvarabuda Government Primary School in Glen-Norah’s surbubs in 2017 after retirng from playing and won the Championship trophy in 2017.
The 44-year-old coach also won a trophy with Prince Edward Academy.
He aims to bring groom stars as his mentors the likes of Freddy Mkwesha, Alois Patsika, Friday Phiri and Tony Kambani did with the juniors in 1997 when Caps United had players like Joe Mugabe, Basil Chisope, Mpemelelo Jowa, Morgan Nkatazo, Gift Mudange,Silver Chigwenje, Eddie Muchongwe, Brenna Msiska, Misheck Misheck Nelson and Tendai Zhuwao who were still at their peak but the youngsters played well although they could not get the first team jersey.
