Teachers Unions and Federation of Educators’ Unions of Zimbabwe (FEUZ) on Friday in the Capital had a joint press conference where they declared that their members are incapacitated prior to the opening of schools on 7 February.
“We are unable to report for duty as per declaration by the government for schools to open on the 7th of February 2022 due to incapacitation”, said Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (TUZ secretary general Ranganai Phiri.
He said the monthly wage is unable to sustain them up to the end of the month or unable them meet the go back to school costs. “We are hoping on the benevolence of the government to review our monthly wage as argumented by NJNC negotiators. We hope the dire situation will be addressed with urgency it deserves”, he added on behalf of the TUZ executive and it’s members.
FEUZ said they made masive consultations with its 6 Teachers Unions affliates to take with regards to opening of schools on 7 February.
They were compelled after the consultations to declare incapacitated due to a number of factors.”The Salary levels earned in January 2022 is inadequate to support transport needs for commuting to various stations in the rural areas and to support daily commissioning by teachers in urban areas”, suss a representative of the organisation at the press conference.
FEUZ concurred with TUZ which is one of its affliates on the sentiments that teachers are incapacitated. FEUZ said as it’s stands rural teachers are willing to go back to work, but they black the necessities of reaching their work stations.
“Those members who would have managed to trek to their work stations will report for duty any two days in a week”, alerted Phiri.
“In light of the financial challenges being faced by by our members, we are urging that no one should be reprimanded in whatever form to failure to report for duty on the declared date”, he added.
As an organisation they ruled themselves not against the opening of schools but challenge arose as heir members are incapacitated.
