Zbctv news bulletin on Sunday night carried a story by Larry Trusida about a former footballer with the name Akinde and our writer Tendai Chisiri illustrates.

Akinde is derived from the name Kunta Kinte. A for Akinde is like Mac for Macmillan.  Mac shows some respect like how A is used in the nickname.

Kunta Kinte is a character in the 1976 novel Roots by American author Alex Haley Roots adapted to a  film  is about Kunta Kinte who was caught in Gambia fetching firewood by slavers. He was taken to America where at first he tried to escape back home. The author said his account of Kinta is a mixture of fact and fiction

The film made waves in Zimbabwe in the last 3RD decade from now and is a good but film to watch. Kunta  Kinte had his right foot chopped off after being caught trying to escape from slavers for the fourth attempt. He later became a social person and married after a long resistance and depicted how someone in a new place can find it hard to adjust

The Chinhoyi man nicknamed Akinde who was on Zbctv dislikes being taken photos and is frustrated about being called blackman in his hood. In Harare, Glen-Norah community has their own Akinde who juxtaposes the one in Chinhoyi as he is a fanatic of photos.

Bernard “Akinde Chipuriro is a fanatic of photos that his friends know that. The Chinhoyi man is a former ZIFA Divison 2 player whilst Chipuriro is a former Castle Premier League player with the now-defunct   Mwana Africa player who at one time.

His friends coined a saying,”You will not see Akinde” to mean photos are important as others may not manage to see him after hearing of his football exploits.
