Covid-19 lockdown hurts majority


Although the Covid-19 lockdown is apropos, it has left the majority in the marginalized communities with depleted food on the table thus distress arising.

The coronavirus pandemic which was first detected in China in December 2019 has spread to all four corners of the earth.

The novel virus- ravaged world has so far recorded 67 000 deaths with 1.2 million people having tested positive to the deadly virus according to a report by Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation television (ZBCtv).

The 21 days lockdown has been imposed by governments worldwide in the wake of the Covid-19.

Glen-Norah residents like any other residents in Zimbabwe’s marginalised communities have started to come to terms that coronavirus is real during the country’s 21 days lockdown now in its second week.

After the announcement by His Excellency President Cde Mnangangwa that the country will experience lockdown, many residents took heed of the message and bought foodstuffs that could last them for the duration of the 21 days lockdown.

“These days chunks are like meat”, said Tanyaradzwa Matenhese of Glen-Norah. Chunks are ground soyabeans processed with preservatives.

Tanya’s family is not the only eating chunks as relish mationwide regularly as they had been a mad scramble of the now delicious relish due to the outbreak of the novel virus.

Many residents no longer frequent the shops because sources of income have been locked down.Majority of the bread winners in the marginalized communities are in the informal sector and households have resorted to the home baked bread as the bread from the supermarkets has becone a luxury good.

Everyone is praying that the 21 days lockdown in the country may be the only Covid-19 days and no more days be added as they anticipate life to go back to normality early.

“A moving lorry trading cabbages makes mothers be all smiles as they rush to buy the fresh cabbages .Even if the prices are exorbotant, the residents cheerfully buy the cabbages.

“I last eat the cabbages long time ago”, said a young mother of two holding the cabbages from the lorry.
