Federation of Organisation of Disabled People in Zimbabwe (FODZ) national coordinator Elisha Ravengai bemoaned shortage of Persons With Disability (PWD) in schools sport Thursday.
In an exclusive interview, at a press conference in Harare on the Deaf Zimbabwe Trust (DZT)’s submissions of the Education Amendment Bill, she called upon the government to give maximum support to PWD as sport in schools is concerned.
“A lot of youngsters with disabilities are not having their talents nurtured from the early age”, she said. “There should be inclusiveness for persons with disabilities in sports activities at schools because sport has become productive to those who are not talented enough in education as they can do well in sport ”, she proposed.
Persons with disabilities have brought medals to the country at regional and international level through their recognition by Zimbabwe National Paralympic Committee under Sports Recreation Commission (SRC).
FODZ coordinator who is totally blind said PWD should also be exposed to goal ball. In goal ball, the players play blind folded which is conducive to blind people.
DZT‘s submissions on the Education Amendment Bill are advocating for the changes in the bill for PWD‘s access to co- curricular activities. Schools are to be mandated to have co- curricular activities and facilities to ensure that children with disabilities participate on an equal basis with others.
