With Harare provincial Copa Coca Cola finals scheduled this Friday at Lord Malvern High School, Vainona High School girls have already set their eyes on the Cup so that history will not be a living tissue to Chidyamakono girls who have won the tournament for 5 consecutive times since 2013.
Although Vainona girls are the defending champions in the girls Harare province, they battled it out with their counterparts in the districts finals. “We had automatically qualified for the provincial Copa Coca Cola finals on the virtue that we are the defending champions but we participated in the districts finals as a way to boost our performance ahead of the national finals”, said the team’s coach Herbert Mugumwa.
Chidyamakono High School girls from Masvingo and Vainona High School girls from Harare are the only winners in the girls segment since the girls category inception in 2011 with five and two wins respectively.
Vainona High School girls coach Herbert Mugumwa blamed fate in last year’s miss of the Copa Coca- Cola Cup.”We were unlucky in last year ‘s edition. The vetting team did not use the identity particulars but only viewed the size in terms of body structure of players. Our girls had big bodies thus having a whole lot of our top players restricted from playing”, he revealed.
