
Dairibord schools rugby festival 2017 started on a high note as the Day 1 matches had scintillating performances mainly from the girls section Sunday.
Vainona girls thrashed Roosevelt girls 44- 0 as the former continued to dominate in the girls schools rugby. Vainona coach Shingi Zhoya was not satisfied with the play of his girls.”The performance was not up to standard and I believe it was the result of the first day and they will improve.The girls did not stick to our game formation but overall they played their heart out in the 2nd half”, he said.
Vainona got their points from Millicent Matimura ‘s 2 tries,Trish Ngwiringwiri’s try and conversion, captain Milanda Tinarwo try, Samantha Chirongoma’ try and Ruvarashe Julumia’s try.
In another girls match at Jubilee field Goromonzi girls edged Harare Girls High 10- 0.Goromonzi girls were good at rucks that some boys schools cannot manage.

Debutants Highfield First Choice girls hammered Victoria High girls12-5 at Rhodes field.Arthur Antonio, First Choice coach was left elated.”I just had 10 days of training with the girls.Most of the girls had not played rugby before so I had to train them against the boys.This was to help them not to fear other girls when passing , hitting or tackling during the festival.

Zimbabwe Rugby Union director Nsikelelo Sibanda commended the festival.”The standards are improving in the girls section.The number of girls team participating has increased” On the match between Vainona and Roosevelt, he said that Roosevelt were competitive but lost it otherwise.”Girls’ matches were captivating and schools must know that for them to win they should find the right coach and do it a certain way”, he said.
He also commended the festival as a good place to scout players for the national teams under 16s and 17s”.This is the place when we can get the girls teams together and watch them”, he revealed.He also urged sportspersons to take sport seriously as it had a future.”Through sports, one can get scholarships to study in Universities overseas.
