While the Europa League is often derided, this is a match of huge importance for Spurs as they go about trying to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.
Not necessarily because they are desperate to win the competition, and end a lengthy wait for a trophy, but because next season they will likely be playing all their home games at Wembley and so far this season in Europe, it has been a stadium short of home comforts according to Euro sport.
They lost two of three home games in their failed Champions League campaign and could do with a lengthy run in the secondary competition to bed in ahead of their expected temporary move next season, with Spurs having to confirm their Wembley residency in the coming weeks.
Another disappointment would increase talk of a Wembley curse, but incredibly Spurs have sold out the national stadium again so will have a full complement of fans roaring them on as they try to create some more favorable memories.
As Harry Kane said on Wednesday:” We don’t know what we are doing next season, so we want to make it as good for us as possible and win as many games as we can there and get that confidence going. The more we play there, the further we will be going in competitions. It is important we try to do that.”
Crucially, Tottenham will be without left- back Danny Rose, who has been excellent this season, with Spurs struggling in his absence. He had missed the last four games with a knee injury and Ben Davies will continue.Erik Lamela will also miss out with the hip problem which has seen him sidelined for four months.
Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham manager had his own assertion on the match.”Time.We can not buy time. It’s not easy to say we want to win titles and move the club to the next level, like when you are building the training facility and the new stadium. It takes time to create a team capable of winning trophies. We are in that process to try to build a really very good squad to try to fight with the big sides to win titles”, he said.
Hein Vanhaezebrouck, Gent manager was optimistic of positive results at Wembley although they would be away.”We’ll try to play our games as usual and I’m confident we’ll show something in this fantastic stadium. It’s good we’ll be able to train here already.I didn’t think Tottenham underestimated us in the first game, they won’t underestimate us this time around either”. The match kicks off at 20.05 at Wembley.
