
Tennis sprouting in rural areas
Rotary e club Ambassadors Championship tennis 2016 tournament director Richmore Murape acknowledged that tennis is no longer a minority sport as it is sprouting in rural areas.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Rotary e club Ambassadors Championships tennis 2016, Murape said it was very encouraging by the response of rural communities over tennis.”Tennis is being played in clay courts in rural areas which is highly commended”, he said.
He also applauded the tourney as of significance as it for players’ development.”The tourney is to expose tennis players to competitive matches before we meet counties like South Africa”, he said.The inaugural tourney which started in 2014 was attended by schools from both rural and urban schools in province namely Harare, Masvingo,Manicaland,Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland East .
School children for U10,U12 and U14 participated in the boys and girls categories which was sponsored by different embassies and other organisations.In the U12 boys, Marko Milosavjevic of Hellenic primary school beat Mohammed Abbas 6-2, 6-1 to lift the gold medal whilst Tanatswa Tanyongana of Chikato primary Masvingo, outclassed Tadisa Chamisa of Dominican Convent in the U12 girls category 6-3,7-5 to clinch the gold medal.
The 3 finalists in all age groups walked away with medals and presents. In the U14 boys category, Kumail Mahommed of Hellenics school silenced Mikhel Raja of Twin Rivers school 6-3,6-1 in the final.Claire Machisa of Alexandra Park edged Charlene Zhuwakini of Hellenic7-5, 6-2 in the girls U14 for the top spot.
The event was a two day tourney which started on Saturday and ended on Sunday.
